A story from the President:
“Our True Testimonials™ program was spawned in early 2012 from the need to connect with our clients, share our story and hear theirs, thus have real relationships instead of just servicing their home or business. As a competitive young electrical service company it can be challenging to gain new clients when starting out. The internet can be a killing ground for advertising dollars where we compete for your click and hope it turns into a call after we have been thoroughly vetted with “Google”. Once we pass the online scrutiny of review reading from potential clients who might think of hiring us, a call or an online message may come through.
In the beginning, as a competing contractor, we thought we would put a few coupons out like our larger competitors in hopes of sparking business from their distribution. I looked at what the larger guys were doing and put out coupons that were the opposite. Not a “dollar off” or “percentage off” but the actual price of the service. The idea was to put out coupons like Kohl’s prices a shirt or even Wal-Mart prices a can of soup, I put a price on our service to install the Device or Fixture on the coupon. I thought ‘there is no reason we can’t sell a known variable and display fees transparently’ so I did!
Our more established competitors though it would be slick to claim to one of our potential clients that our coupons were a bait and switch campaign and that our company was incompetent. It was hard, we tried to overcome it by contacting review sites where our competitors left false reviews, asking them to be removed as we could service our clients as advertised. We were small but mighty and our pricing was accurate for our company size. Our competitors had to match our coupons as they had advertised and that was not my problem. My story fell on deaf ears as review sites said that people could create accounts and review companies even though they were not necessarily serviced by the company. I was outraged and called the BBB only to be met with the same attitude. The claim there was ‘We can’t police other people’s sites; but would you like to pay us for a membership to gain credibility with the BBB logo?’ This was no help to the review situation nor did I have the money at that stage of the business to buy my rating.
I was not going to let it stop my dream, my passion and my drive to start this company. I knew there is far more to this company than running wires to a kitchen or sweating pipes together in a basement. I grabbed a dry erase board, went to Colorado Signs and Graphics and had my logo put on it that day. I called my most recent clients and arranged a follow up in person. I told them what our issues were with our larger competitors and about the 10 Reviews on national review sites where I could not rebut the claims without paying for a membership on those sites. I asked if they would be willing to provide a ‘True Testimonial’ as I called it and write physically on the board their thoughts and experiences with 303-Carefree. I thought that it was the only “true” way to know that my customer actually wrote the review because it was in their hand writing and heck, there was even a picture of them holding the board. It was a success and my clients responded with “welcoming arms” around a dry erase board. That is how the ‘True Testimonial™’ program was born.
Back then it was a serious deal to me. We were facing 1 -1/2 years in business trying to build a name and credibility and I was not going to go quietly into the night. Years later, just having celebrated our 6th year in business for Electrical and 1 year for Plumbing it has turned into a program of fun interaction and engagement for the company and our clients. It’s more like ‘coffee with a friend’ and from there the possibilities are endless because they know that as an owner and the CEO, I CARE! I really do CARE about making the future better for us all.”
